This 60-minute introductory session that will explore current issues in publishing and suggest helpful strategies for navigating the world of scholarly communications and for understanding your rights and responsibilities as an author.  

This session will provide a primer on: 

  • The research and publishing lifecycles 

  • The economics of scholarly publishing 

  • Understanding a publication agreement: copyright, licensing, and author’s rights in scholarly publishing 

  • Evaluating Journals and Publishers 

  • Deceptive publishing

Getting Published Series: Session 2A - Getting Published in the Social Sciences

November 10, 2021, 2:00 - 3:30 pm

This 60-minute session will provide a more in-depth look at publishing in the social sciences and humanities. 

This session will provide a primer on:  

  • What editors in the social sciences and humanities look for 

  • Factors to consider in journal or publisher selection (such as impact factor & open access policies) 

  • Peer review 

  • Manuscript preparation and things to look out for 

  • Ethics and corresponding author responsibilities

Getting Published Series: Session 2B / Publishing in STEM

November 11, 2021, 2:00 - 3:30 pm

This 60-minute session will provide a more in-depth look at publishing in the STEM disciplines. You have spent years designing, conducting, analysing and writing about your research. The manuscript submission phase also requires careful planning and consideration. Please note this sesion focuses on journal article publishing. 

The session will provide a primer on: 

  • Factors to consider in journal selection 

  • Transparency and reproducibility (including reporting guidelines, preprints, etc.) 

  • Checklist for prepapring and submitting a manuscript (including pre and post submission) 

  • Peer reviewe demystified 

  • Author responsibilities
