Established in 1979, the Korean collection at the University of Toronto’s East Asian Library is the largest and the oldest research collection for Korean studies in Canada. In the past decade, our collection grew rapidly from 20,000 to over 65,000 volumes of Korean language materials including monographs, serials, and audio-visual materials. The Korean collection at the University of Toronto is consistently ranked among the top ten East Asian Libraries in North America.

Our collection’s strength lies in the Humanities and Social Sciences with substantial holdings in history, literature, language, philosophy, religion, anthropology and the arts. More recently, we strive to collect materials in Korean Christianity, Korean Women’s Studies, and North Korea in support of teaching and research interests in Korean studies.

External Collaboration

The East Asian Library at the University of Toronto is a proud member of Korean Collections Consortium of North America (KCCNA), which aims to develop and share comprehensive Korean Studies Collections among the member libraries in North America. Since becoming the first Canadian member of KCCNA in 1997, we have been receiving generous support from the Korea Foundation to build the Korean collection in the following areas of Korean studies:
  • Anthropology
  • Local and regional government
  • Military science and history
  • Modern literature
  • Modern philosophy
  • Socialism and communism
  • Publications on Koreans in Canada as a whole
  • Publications on Korea and Koreans published in Eastern Canada (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island)
KCCNA member libraries provide access and inter-library loans at free of charge to any scholars pursuing Korea-related research in North America.
