Agenda
10:30am - Fair, Open, Free?
Ariel Katz, University of Toronto; Jennifer MacInnis, Ryerson University; Sam Trosow, University of Western Ontario; Kelsey Merkley, Creative Commons Canada
Join Ariel Katz from the University of Toronto, Sam Trosow from the University of Western Ontario, Jennifer MacInnis from Ryerson University, and Kelsey Merkley from Creative Commons Canada for coffee and a discussion entitled “Fair, Open, Free? Copyright, Open Licensing, and Academic Freedom in Canadian Higher Education.”
Recent developments in the Access Copyright v. York University litigation and the upcoming review of the Copyright Act have increased uncertainty about the extent to which user rights can continue to be put into practice at Canadian universities and colleges. At the same time, open access publishing and the use of open licenses by academic authors continues to grow, as does support for openness from governments, other funding bodies, and university administrations. A distinguished panel of experts will help reconcile these conflicting trends, and discuss their implications for research and teaching in Canada.
