The Colonial America: Growth, Trade and Development

China and the Modern World: Hong Kong, Britain and China 

This collection offers detailed information on the political, military, social, economic, and external development of Hong Kong as a British colony between 1841-1951. Consisting of British Colonial office correspondence, the collection includes despatches and correspondence between governors of Hong Kong and the Colonial Office, also letters and telegrams of other government departments and organizations such as the Foreign, Home and War Offices. All hand-written material included in the collection will have Handwritten Text Recognition applied, allowing these documents to be full-text searchable. This collection documents the formation of the National Council for United States-China Trade and the role it played in the development of trade and the Council's library holdings relating to China's trade and economy. The Council was formed in 1973 between U.S. business firms and the People's Republic of China and was meant to facilitate trade. The collection consists of two sub-groups of records: administrative files and Business Advisory Services Department files. In addition to being a source of information about the history of the Council and development of trade, the files have research value in aspects of trade such as shipping, packaging, contract negotiations, banking, inspection, and trademarks. Also, included are files related to U.S.-China relations, China's trade with other countries, and China's history in culture and business practices. The Amerasia Affair, China, and Postwar Anti-Communist Fervor

 This collection uncovers one of the greast spy cases in the postwar era, which concluded in the growing atmosphere of McCarythism where many saw the affair as an indication of Communist espionage on the government. The case was the first public drama featuring charges that American citizens had spied for the Communists. The affair began with an article printed in the magazine Amerasia in January 26, 1945 which was almost identical to the report Kenneth Wells, of the Office of Strategic Services, wrote on Thailand. This discovery led to FBI illegal seizures of documents, and investigations into reporters and State Department employees, resulting in arrests that anti-climatically resulted in fines. The documents in the collection shed light on the debate over who "lost" China, Soviet espionage, McCarythism, and the loyalty program -- and also the bureaucratic intricacies of anti-communism in Washington. Clandestine Resistance and Vichy collection provides perspectives from both the Vichy government and the resistance movement during the occupation of 1940-1944, which constitutes the sum of French press that reached Britain during this time. This collection serves as a record of what was known by the British about life in France during the war, and offers a full picture of the basis on which many key political decisions were made in British about the conduct of war in France. Journaux de la Révolution de 1848 (Newspapers of the French Revolution 1848)

This collection contains a unique collection of newspapers and periodicals that detail the social and political upheavals of this period. The French Revolution of 1848 resulted in the collapse of monarchy in France and a power vacuum of competing voices that sought control for France's future. Coverage in this collection continues through the coup d’état in 1851 to the establishment of the Second Empire in 1852. Titles included represent continuations of national dailies and weeklies which were published through the unrest, offering a base-note of news coverage from journalists. Many other publications at this time directly responded to the political situation and witnessed the events from very partisan perspectives -- including George Sand as one of the famous literary voices commenting on the unrest.  is a collection of reports, studies, and surveys prepared on various topics of interest to the Department of State. Topics range from individual commodities or countries to the economic and political characteristics of whole regions. Reports vary from short memorandums to detailed, documented studies. Policing the Shanghai International Settlement, 1894-1945

 is a primary source collection from the Special Branch of the Shanghai Municipal Police. Topics covered include collecting intelligence on political demonstrations, strikes, labor and social unrest, foreign and domestic subversive activities, and areas of dispute between the International Settlement and the Chinese government. Most extensive coverage is provided by the Special Branch dossier files, which date from 1929-1945. Many items are organized around a particular topic and contain different kinds of source material. Civil War Service Reports of Union Army Generals Collection

 contains the generals' reports of service from 1864-1887, which was an attempt by the Adjutant General's Office (AGO) to obtain more complete records of the service of the Union generals served in the Civil War. Included in these reports is a succinct account of a general's military history from March 1961 and onwards.  In the reports are numerous accounts of battles, including First Bull Run, Second Bull Run, Antitam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Chickamauga. The Southern Literary Messenger: Literature of the Old South

 collection documents the thirty-year run of the American South's most important literary periodical, "The Southern Literary Messenger." The journal was meant to "scope out the land of literary promise in the South," as described by the magazine's first editor, James Ewell Heath. In the early 19th century, literary magazines in the North, such as "Harper's" set the tone for dialogue. As topics related to slavery arose in the 1850s, the journal's content began to favor issues of states' rights, defense of slavery, and polemics against abolitionism. The journal finally ceased publication in 1864 after publishing accounts of the Civil War and criticizing the North and Confederate government. Kennedy's commitment to civil rights by travelling by bus from Washington DC to New Orleans. collection contains the publication run of The Moving Picture World, an aggressive trade publication, lasting from March 9, 1907 to January 7, 1928. Similar to other general entertainment industry papers such as the New York Clipper or Variety, the World set a standard for the broadest possible coverage, reviewing new releases and published news, features, and interviews relating to all aspects of the film industry. The vast quantity of advertisements published in each issue makes the World a veritable industry encyclopedia. One of the first advertisements featured in the publication was for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, headed "Mergers Make Greatness!" Information and opinion in the film industry were shaped by publications, such as the World, who were all competing for the same limited subscribers. collection provides access to the full print run of the Flash Press from 1826-1876, depicting the seamier aspects of urban life during this time.
