The collection consists of two sub-groups of records: administrative files and Business Advisory Services Department files. In addition to being a source of information about the history of the Council and development of trade, the files have research value in aspects of trade such as shipping, packaging, contract negotiations, banking, inspection, and trademarks. Also, included are files related to U.S.-China relations, China's trade with other countries, and China's history in culture and business practices. The Amerasia Affair, China, and Postwar Anti-Communist Fervor
This collection uncovers one of the greast spy cases in the postwar era, which concluded in the growing atmosphere of McCarythism where many saw the affair as an indication of Communist espionage on the government. The case was the first public drama featuring charges that American citizens had spied for the Communists. The affair began with an article printed in the magazine Amerasia in January 26, 1945 which was almost identical to the report Kenneth Wells, of the Office of Strategic Services, wrote on Thailand. This discovery led to FBI illegal seizures of documents, and investigations into reporters and State Department employees, resulting in arrests that anti-climatically resulted in fines. The documents in the collection shed light on the debate over who "lost" China, Soviet espionage, McCarythism, and the loyalty program -- and also the bureaucratic intricacies of anti-communism in Washington. This collection contains a unique collection of newspapers and periodicals that detail the social and political upheavals of this period. The French Revolution of 1848 resulted in the collapse of monarchy in France and a power vacuum of competing voices that sought control for France's future. Coverage in this collection continues through the coup d’état in 1851 to the establishment of the Second Empire in 1852. Titles included represent continuations of national dailies and weeklies which were published through the unrest, offering a base-note of news coverage from journalists. Many other publications at this time directly responded to the political situation and witnessed the events from very partisan perspectives -- including George Sand as one of the famous literary voices commenting on the unrest. is a primary source collection from the Special Branch of the Shanghai Municipal Police. The Southern Literary Messenger: Literature of the Old South
collection documents the thirty-year run of the American South's most important literary periodical, "The Southern Literary Messenger." The journal was meant to "scope out the land of literary promise in the South," as described by the magazine's first editor, James Ewell Heath. In the early 19th century, literary magazines in the North, such as "Harper's" set the tone for dialogue. As topics related to slavery arose in the 1850s, the journal's content began to favor issues of states' rights, defense of slavery, and polemics against abolitionism. The journal finally ceased publication in 1864 after publishing accounts of the Civil War and criticizing the North and Confederate government. Through the Camera Lens: The Moving Picture World and the Silent Cinema Era, 1907-1927
collection contains the publication run of The Moving Picture World, an aggressive trade publication, lasting from March 9, 1907 to January 7, 1928. After January 1928, the publication divided into to, becoming "Exhibitors Herald" and "Moving Picture World." Similar to other general entertainment industry papers such as the New York Clipper or Variety, the World set a standard for the broadest possible coverage, reviewing new releases and published news, features, and interviews relating to all aspects of the film industry. The vast quantity of advertisements published in each issue makes the World a veritable industry encyclopedia. One of the first advertisements featured in the publication was for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, headed "Mergers Make Greatness!" Information and opinion in the film industry were shaped by publications, such as the World, who were all competing for the same limited subscribers. American Underworld: The Flash Press, Crime, Scandal, and Blackmail Papers of the Nineteenth Century
collection provides access to the full print run of the Flash Press from 1826-1876, depicting the seamier aspects of urban life during this time. The collection contains satirical and humorous articles on the low-life aspects of city life, original poems and songs devoted to off-colour characters, reviews of bawdy theatrical performances and reporting on gambling and gamblers among much more. The Flash Press often moralized the same topics they covered, which included prostitution, urban gangs, and sensational crimes.
