I. The Committee on Personal Safety & Security is a standing committee of Library Council.

II. Membership


Health and Safety Officer

Gerstein Science Information Centre
2 representatives (one Union, one Management)

Robarts Library
2 representatives (one Management, one Union)

Other, 2 representatives
(Cheng Yu Tung, Engineering, Fisher, Noranda, OISE/UT, Pharmacy)
(one Union, one Management)
Members shall be appointed by the Chair of the Sub-committee on Committees in consultation with department heads and the president of the union local, to serve staggered two-year terms with the possibility of reappointment. The Committee will elect its own chair.

III. Terms of Reference

  1. To receive and respond appropriately to concerns related to the personal safety and security of central library staff and library users.
  2. In cooperation with campus police and the University's Personal Safety Officer, to undertake annual safety audits of libraries in the central system.
  3. To provide guidance for the establishment, implementation, and review of a Library Watch programme in each of the libraries in the central system.
  4. In consultation with the Director, Financial and Administrative Services or his/her designate(s), to evaluate procedures for handling cash, and to review the procedures when appropriate.
  5. To participate in the orientation of building patrol staff.
  6. To review policies relating to the public use of library computers with respect to the training staff receive for implementing policies and the effectiveness of sanctions for non-compliance.
  7. To meet as often as necessary, but not fewer than four times a year.
  8. To report to Library Council in February.
