Library Council Goals


Long term goals

  1. To play an effective role in advising the Chief Librarian on policies pertaining to services and operations in the Central Library System.

  2. To encourage and improve communication throughout the Central Library System.

  3. To establish as necessary library committees and task forces to deal with service and operational policy issues in the Central Library System.

  4. To ensure that the work of the Library Council and its committees is focused and appropriate and that the Council operates according to its Terms of Reference and the Ground rules for the Operations of Library Council.

  5. To review goals and priorities of the Central Library System periodically and recommend changes when necessary.

Short term goals

  1. To monitor issues raised in the Chief Librarian's response to the Provostial Review of the Library.

  2. To recommend approaches to the Chief Librarian in dealing with the following issues during the coming year:
    a) Meeting changing operational needs. b) Improving the effectiveness of service delivery to users. c) Reducing redundancy and waste.

Suggested actions for 1994/95 to accomplish goals

  1. To play an effective role in advising the Chief Librarian on policies pertaining to services and operations in the Central Library System.

    Encourage and receive agenda items related to services and operational issues in the Central Library. (On-going)

    Ensure that agenda items are dealt with either by Library Council or by appropriate individuals or committees. (On-going)

  2. To encourage and improve communication throughout the Central Library System.
    Suggested action:
    Meet with elected representatives to discuss communication issues and barriers and suggest solutions.

    Monitor progress and suggest improvements to be made to communication infastructure.

    Ensure that elected representatives communicate LC business to library departments and that all staff have opportunities for input.

  3. To establish as necessary library committees and task forces to deal with services and operational policy issues in the Central Library system.

    * Evaluate existing committees and set up new committees as necessary; recommend membership, terms of reference and assign charges to committees. (On-going)

  4. To ensure that the work of the Library Council and its committees is focused and appropriate and that the Council operates according to its Terms of Reference and the Groundrules for the Operations of Library Council.

  5. To review goals and priorities of the Central Library System periodically and recommend changes when necessary.
    Suggested action:
    Assist in identifying and advising on priorities as they relate to service needs of patrons.
    Ensure widest possible discussion of priorities and important issues related to services and operations.

  6. To monitor issues raised in the Chief Librarian's response to the Provostial Review of the Library.
    Suggested action:
    Assist the Chief Librarian with implementation of approved recommendations as required.

  7. To recommend approaches to the Chief Librarian in dealing with the following issues during the coming year:

    a) Meeting changing operational needs.
    b) Improving the effectiveness of service deleivery to users.
    c) Reducing redundancy and waste.
    Suggested action:
    Establish Task Force or assign existing Committees to look at specific operational and service needs that are of concern to the whole central system, and propose approaches for discussion by Council.
