The Licensed Software Office (LSO) negotiates and administers software license agreements with many vendors in order to decrease overall software costs to the University. The software can be purchased by U of T students, faculty and staff. However, depending on our agreement with the vendor, not all software is available to everyone.

Transition Full Transition To Online Purchasing

The Licensed Software Office will be moving to online-only order processing and purchasing via software.utoronto.ca or uSOURCE over the summer of 2019. The paper order forms will still be available for some products, but only for a limited time, until the transition is finalized.


Pre-Sale MATLAB for July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020

Update July 19, 2019: Earlier today the purchase order was sent to MathWorks for processing. Once processed our priority will be to send license files to those who had pre-purchased the product.

MATLAB for the July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 license period is available for pre-sale. The uSOURCE and software.utoronto.ca catalogues have been updated. For full information on the license please see our MATLAB license page.

We are currently in the process of renewing MATLAB for the July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 license period. There is a 30 day grace period and the software will continue to work until the end of July. When the license has been procured from MathWorks we will then send updated license files to those who pre-purchased the product. Email notifications will also be sent to those who had purchased the product last year.

Coming Soon SAS for July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020

We are currently in the process of renewing SAS for the July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 license period. There is a 60 day grace period and the software will continue to work until the end of August. Continue to check this space for updates.


Buy Now Windows Server 2019

Microsoft Windows Server 2019 is now avialable for purchase. Windows Server 2019 is licensed on a core based licensing model. The minimum purchase requirement is a license covering 16 cores. Additional two core license packs can be purchased to cover additional cores. A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor. See the licensing datasheet for licensing examples.

The software can be purchased and downloaded immediately afterwords online at:

U of T faculty, graduate students, and staff who are off-campus must use UTORvpn to access the website. The SAS software order form can be scanned and emailed back to our office. DVD purchases can be picked up via appointment.

Buy Now SPSS for August 1, 2018 to July 31, 2019

IBM SPSS for the August 1, 2018 to July 31, 2019 license period is now available for purchase for Faculty and Staff. The latest version is SPSS 25 and is available for Windows 32-bit, Windows 64-bit, Mac (10.12 and above) and Linux.

The software can be purchased and downloaded immediately afterwords online at:

U of T faculty, graduate students, and staff who are off-campus must use UTORvpn to access the website.

  • SPSS 25 is supported on 10.12 and above.
  • SPSS 24 is supported on 10.10, 10.11 and 10.12 only.
  • SPSS 23 is supported on 10.9, 10.10, and 10.11 only.
  • SPSS 22 is supported on 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9 only.
  • SPSS 21 is no longer supported.

Free MATLAB for Students for July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019

MATLAB for Students is currently free for students for personal academic use. This license cannot be used for institutional research or commercial purposes and can only be installed on a single personal workstation.
